Hot cross buns are a classic Easter treat that can be enjoyed for breakfast or as a sweet snack. Here is an easy recipe for making hot cross buns at home this Easter Period. While amazing on their own, we think these would be perfect with QJJ Jams but especially our unique Easter Jam.

Hot Cross Bun Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast (can be found at your supermarket)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup raisins or currants
  • 1/2 cup candied citrus peel (optional)
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/2 cup icing sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter until the butter is melted. Remove from heat and let cool until warm to the touch.
  3. Beat the eggs and add them to the milk mixture.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.
  5. Add the raisins or currants and the candied citrus peel (if using). Mix until the fruit is evenly distributed.
  6. Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough forms a ball.
  7. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
  8. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a clean cloth. Let rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  9. Preheat oven to 190°C.
  10. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.
  11. Place the balls of dough onto a greased baking sheet and let rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  12. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg white and water. Brush the egg wash over the buns.
  13. Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  14. In a small bowl, mix together the icing sugar and milk. Pipe the mixture onto the buns in a cross pattern.
  15. Serve warm or at room temperature with QJJ Easter Jam for a truly tasty Easter experience.  Enjoy!
